Designed by internationally acclaimed artist, dancer and choreographer, Zinour Fathoullin, these drums are a celebration of the Siberian and Canadian North, and Speed Skate Canada’s Inukshuk Legacy Fund. This fund is set up to provide funding to our Canadian speed skaters as they train their way to the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia.  Siberian born and now a Canadian citizen, Zinour is the ideal artist to have come up with this idea and blended design.

The drum design is that of the Hunti and Nentsi Inuit of the Siberian Plains.  The "horns" represent the antlers of the reindeer (domesticated caribou), who are their lifeblood.  The Inuksuk ("in the likeness of a person") is an ancient stone structure used by the Inuit of Canada and now adopted as a global symbol of "showing the way".

Before coming to Canada in 1990, Zinour was a successful artist, dancer and choreographer in Russia.  Much of his work was done in the Siberian Arctic with and among the Hunti and Nentsi Inuit of Siberia.  A Hunti Shaman asked him to take her stories and use them to create dances, which he did.  In 1996, Zinour and his family moved to the Canadian Arctic whereby he took disaffected Inuit from the streets and taught them their own culture and dance/drumming styles.  Thus was born "Sikumiut/People of the Ice" an Inuit dance and drumming group which rose to international acclaim in under 2 years.  "Sikumiut" represented Canada in the CBC TV Global Millennium Special broadcast on December 31, 1999 and international festivals in the Ukraine, Russia, France, Belgium, Alaska, Greenland, New York  and southern Canada.  Also a fine artist and sculptor, Zinour was named among the top 30 artists in Canada in June 2009.
